Going forward, all packaged food products would be required to print Nutrition Facts, just like we see on standard international packaged food labels.
Shout out to all our vegetable or cooking oil friends too…from coconut oil to sesame oil to groundnut oil you can no longer sell without fortifying with Vitamin A. Please do the needful as soon as possible.
Trans fatty acid levels beyond 2g per 100g is no prohibited. So is Saturated Fatty Acid level requirement: The intake of SFA MUST now be less than 10% of total fat or energy intake and that total fat should not exceed 30% of total energy (which is the entire food). In other words, if you have 100g of a meal, the fat and oil content should not exceed 30%. Of that 30%, the level of SFA must not exceed 10%.
We are unsure when all these would be fully approved, do not that this is a draft. It is however gazetted and can be enforced under Law. It would only be a matter of time.
So while you’re thinking of printing your new labels, consider these new guidelines.
You may find more on this development on the NAFDAC website. I would visit the website more often from now😄
Big thanks to my dear Mum for this content. She was invited to the meeting and encouraged me to accompany her today.
